The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a 1.0 FTE faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty, this position primarily provides outpatient medical care and patient administrative services at the University of Colorado Hospital for the Comprehensive Thoracic Aortic Disease (CTAD) program. The candidate will also engage in similar duties for other cardiac surgery patients who are not part of the CTAD program. Primary functions of the position include coordinating, triaging, and organizing patient flow as well as conducting patient visits under the supervision of attending physicians and surgeons.
Clinical and patient care duties include:
Discussions with patients regarding information about the program, scheduling of appointments and tests that will be performed.
Reviewing medical records to determine if appropriate for clinic.
Requesting outside diagnostic tests and pathology/cytology as needed.
Ordering and interpretation of labs or diagnostic tests needed prior to multidisciplinary review.
Prescribing medications as needed, including pre-procedure medications.
Conducting peer to peer review or writing medical necessity letters with insurance companies for pre-authorization of tests as appropriate.
Communicating with referring physicians regarding patient referrals.
Independently performing age appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients
Round on inpatients
Independently seeing patients in follow up as needed.
Collaboration with team members after conference to finalize patient plans and assisting with ordering tests and referrals as needed
Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system.
Contacting referring physicians/PCP for any other medical issues that may have been discovered or referring patient to appropriate specialty/provider as needed
Contacting surgeon’s office to facilitate perioperative management and OR scheduling as needed.
Facilitating staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
Providing patients with hospital resources as needed.
Conducts routine chart audits as required
Ensuring all specialty providers are staffed in clinic(s) each week.
Generating weekly lists of patients to be discussed at conference.
Sending new patient letters to referring physicians using EPIC system.
Research duties include:
Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations
Tracking patient outcomes/data
Assisting with database accuracy and management
Compliance with hospital protocols/standards.
Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis
Practices in a fiscally responsible manner
70% Clinical duties, 30% Research duties
Typical Physical Demands:
The APP position requires the ability to engage in a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. The position may also require standing and walking for extended periods of time as required during the provision of services. The position requires normal visual acuity and hearing. The APP may also be exposed to communicable diseases and bodily fluids and it is expected that the candidate will be appropriately knowledgeable regarding universal safety precautions.
Typical Working Conditions:
This is a clinic based practice. There may be exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to the clinical environment.
Knowledge of the professional medical and surgical practice to give and evaluate patient care in the thoracic aortic aneurysm clinic.
Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine and surgery to provide on-going patient care.
Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
Skill in developing, maintaining, and implementing department quality improvement protocols.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and their family members, medical staff, residents, fellows, medical students, and the public.
Ability to maintain quality control standards.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly as an integral member of a team.

Minimum qualificationsfor Advanced Practice Provider*
Graduation from an accredited NP or PA program
Additional qualifications for NP:
o Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure by a national professional organization.
o Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Colorado
o Admission to the Advanced Practice Registry of the Colorado Board of Nursing
o Current PA license for the state of Colorado
Prescriptive authority required
Prior experience in specialty area
Current ACLS certification
Preferred qualifications for NP or PA
Prior experience coordinating a multi-disciplinary clinical program
Prior experience with EPIC
