Nature of Work

The Department of Neurology has an opening for a motivated full-time Assistant Professor - Research to lead projects investigating enterovirus biology, acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), and novel antiviral treatments in various mouse models of AFM. This position will collaborate with study colleagues at all levels of the organization. We are seeking an individual who is collaborative, communicative, caring, and highly motivated, who can think both critically and creatively, is detail oriented and organized, has a good eye for detail, is focused on quality, and is highly motivated in all areas of study coordination.

The Assistant Professor will work independently and in collaboration with Dr. Maria Nagel on research projects. Candidates will design, performance and analysis of experiments; prepare manuscripts and grants, and direct activities of professional research assistants/postdoctoral fellows working on these projects.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Conceptualize/lead projects to investigate novel drug therapies aimed at slowing, stopping, or reversing paralysis in various mouse models of EV-D68 induced acute flaccid myelitis.

  • Conceptualize/lead projects to investigate spread/entry of EV-D68 into the spinal cord in vivo (mouse model) and in vitro.

  • Design experiments examining the role of microglia and astrocytes in EV-D68 infection of the spinal cord and their role in the development of paralysis. Requires proficiency in IHC.

  • Assist and manage various components of program project life cycle that include:

  • Assist with Project 1 of the PI's current RO1, that investigates nucleotide differences between paralytic (US/IL/14-18952) and non-paralytic (US/CA/14-4231) EV-D68 isolates by cloning hybrid viral isolates and testing variants in a mouse model of AFM.

  • Assist with investigation of the role of microglia in neurologic disease caused by West Nile Virus.

  • Working, communicating, and collaborating with various colleagues (e.g., principal investigator, clinicians, medical staff, sponsors, contract research organizations (CROs), and neurology research staff, finance and billing professionals, and regulatory team) at various stages of each study assigned. The assistant professor - research is responsible for providing excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders by presenting a positive image of the department and University.

  • Independently and in collaboration, responsible for writing grants and serving as a co-Investigator/Principal Investigator on NIH-funded grants.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • NIH grant assembly

  • Histology (dissection of intact nervous tissue and cryosectioning); troubleshooting IHC with untested antibodies; western blot; cell culture of infected cell lines; Enterovirus D68 handling, expansion and titering; nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR and qPCR; confocal microscopy; electron microscopy; mouse handling and injection (IM, IP, and IC).

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work independently and within diverse team structures.

  • Respect patient privacy/rights and put patient safety first, excellent patient rapport for any clinically-related projects or human sample acquisition

  • A positive, motivated, engaged, and caring attitude

  • Great attention to detail and quality

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), JMP pro or equivalent statistical analysis program, and Image J.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $85,000 - $100,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Ph.D. in neuroscience, virology, toxicology, or related field

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship in the fields of neuroscience and enterovirus pathogenesis.

  • 3 years' experience in (1) enterovirus research; (2) Antiviral trials in a mouse model of enterovirus induced acute flaccid myelitis; (3) Collection of spinal cord tissue for IHC, PCR, and TCID50 analysis.

  • Experience writing grants (either training or research) which were successfully funded

  • Experience with all aspects of mouse colony management and proficiency in intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and intracerebral injection of postnatal day two mouse pups.

  • Experience preparing water- and oil- soluble drugs for ED50 / LD50 analysis in vivo, and IC50 assay in vitro.

  • Statistical expertise using MANOVA, mixed models, and survival plots for data with non-normal distribution, uneven sample sizes, censoring, repeated measures, and log transformations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics

  • Expertise in cellular anatomy of spinal cord neurons and glial cells

  • Experience in immunohisto- and cyto-chemistry, confocal microscopy and imaging software, basic tissue culture and virology techniques (infection, titers, stock preps), primary human neuron cultures, brain and spinal cord dissection, Western blot, cryotome sectioning, and qPCR of virus infected samples.
