The University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology provides extensive expertise in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology for the flagship hospital, UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado as well as three additional affiliated hospitals, several clinics, and thirteen free standing emergency department laboratories. The department will be extending pathology service to UCHealthHighlands Ranch Hospital (HRH), a new 360,000 square feet hospital. The full-service hospital will open with approximately 72 inpatient beds with room to expand. An 85,000-square-foot medical office building housing a two-story cancer center is adjacent. The hospital will feature a birth center including C-section operating rooms and Level II NICU, intensive care unit, operating rooms, Level III trauma center and emergency department, advanced cardiac services, and complete imaging. UCHealth will partner with both community physicians and with the CU School of Medicine to provide care at Highlands Ranch Hospital.

Nature of Work:



The Department of Pathology seeks a full time clinical faculty member (Instructor to Clinical Associate Professor) and experienced pathologist to practice at HRH. Candidates with strong clinical backgrounds, experience in laboratory leadership and management, extensive expertise in anatomic and clinical pathology, and strong communication and interpersonal skills will be favored. Candidates currently in private /community settings will be considered. The successful candidate must be able to perform both frozen sections and fine needle aspirations in a timely and experienced manner.

The HRH AP lab will be digitally linked to UCH, hence immediate consultation with subspecialty experts will be provided on an as needed basis. Complex slide based assays, cytogenetic and molecular analysis will be provided by other departmental faculty and labs. The CP lab will be mostly low and moderate complexity tests. High complexity testing will be coordinated through the UCHealth system. The position will receive part time additional support (including after-hours on call) by other AP and CP Pathologists in the department.

Employment expectations:



Clinical and Administrative/Leadership Service



This position requires day-to-day clinical, leadership and administrative duties in both anatomic and clinical pathology including:

  • Oversight of quality assurance/quality management/quality improvement programs

  • Advocate for appropriate laboratory test utilization and send-out testing orders

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agency requirements, including maintenance of College of American Pathologists laboratory accreditation

  • Weekly organizational meetings with HRH laboratory managers/supervisors

  • Policy and procedure review and appraisal

  • Coordinated leadership/management with the Department of Pathology (Vice Chairs of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Chair) and the UCHealth Clinical Laboratory Service Line committee, in regards to clinical quality, productivity, financial metrics, billing, capital expenditure, and management

  • Consultation with HRH providers and patients, in regards to medical care, laboratory test selection and result interpretation.

  • Independent case review and interpretation in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

  • Review and signout of surgical pathology and cytology specimens

  • Consultation with UH pathologists as necessary for complex or non-routine cases

Education and scholarly activities



  • Resource for and oversight of laboratory staff training and educating HRH medical staff

  • Continued education including attendance at national annual meetings, such as CAP and ASCP.

  • Participation in numerous academic conferences will be provided via digital, telephone and web based technologies.

  • Opportunities to participate in translational research, QI and QC programs of the department are envisioned.

Academic Administrative Activities



  • Participation in departmental, school, and professional committees

  • Participation in CU Medicine interdisciplinary and disciplinary clinical conferences related to pathology.

Additional Responsibilities



  • Active participation in the HRH medical board

  • Attend HRH medical staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications:



Candidates must have an MD or DO terminal degree with ABP board certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. At least 3 years of experience as an independent pathologist.

Candidates must be facile with gross and microscopic anatomic pathology, frozen sections and the performance, processing and interpretation of fine needle aspirations biopsy cytology. Expertise in gyn and non-FNA cytology is not required.

Experience in in blood banking, core lab and general Clinical Pathology is required.
