Job Summary:

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Responsible for day to day recruitment activities for all employees of the BDC including faculty, research assistants, university staff, pre and post-doctoral fellows, ‘Persons of Interest' (POIs), and undergraduate students.

  • Assist search committees by editing job descriptions, screening applicants, and selecting/developing assessment devices.

  • Work collaboratively with Central, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine Human Resources, and BDC Business Services Professional to ensure all actions are accurate and approved.

  • Generate letters of offer for all hires to ensure appropriate language and commitments are included.

  • Oversee onboarding process for students and employees to ensure timely completion of all necessary paperwork (e.g. visas, permanent resident requests, work authorizations etc..).

  • Manage onboarding process for new employees including gathering all required documents, coordinating access, reviewing training requirements, and providing resources.

  • Offboard employees including obtaining processing leave payouts, exit interviews, cancelling access and obtaining university property.

  • Serve as a resource and the primary point of contact for policies and procedures including time reporting, FMLA, FAMLI, worker's comp, short term disability, and ADA accommodations.

  • Manage leave tracking and monthly payroll process including uploads and reconciliation

  • Manage the performance management process including evaluations, performance improvement, and termination proceedings

  • Maintain personnel files (electronic and hard copy) and is responsible for disposing of hard copies appropriately.

  • Counsel division employees on HR policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

At the Principal Professional level, the Human Resources Specialist will:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert responsible for articulating complex HR concepts clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and leadership.

  • Identify opportunities and develop communications for professional development, mentorship, and training/cross training programs to meet organizational needs; provide education and advice to supervisors and leadership related to staff and faculty employment and compliance, including documentation and initiation of discipline and discharge procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Senior Level:

  • A bachelor's degree in human resources, business, public administration, higher education administration, social sciences, behavioral sciences or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • Two years (2) of experience working in human resources.

Principal Level:

  • A bachelor's degree in human resources, business, public administration, higher education administration, social sciences, behavioral sciences or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • Three years (3) of experience working in human resources.

  • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in human resources, public administration, business, higher education administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • Experience working with Peoplesoft Human Capital Management, CU Careers, PRiSM

  • Experience working in human resources in a higher education or healthcare setting.

  • Experience working with accounting and financial data effectively analyzing as well as identifying variances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong independent judgement and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate a broad range of laws, rules, and regulations in order to exercise good judgment in applying them to human resource challenges.

  • Knowledge of the professional standards, concepts, and practices of recruitment, organizational development and human resource policy.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including public speaking.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

  • Thorough knowledge of current management and leadership methods and best practices.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and coordinate complex human resource activities.

The full-time HR Professional at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes will share responsibility for recruitment, on-boarding, off-boarding, and payroll processes for the BDC. This individual will maintain a working knowledge of all relevant policies and procedures and serve as a resource for faculty and staff on matters related to recruitment, onboarding, orientation, off-boarding, payroll processes, leave, performance management, and professional development. This position will work closely with the University of Colorado Denver and School of Medicine Human Resources units, as well as with the University's Employee Services Department.

This is an on-campus position with potential for hybrid work schedule (1-2 days/week) in the future.

The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is the largest diabetes institute in the world specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for children and adults.
