_Job Summary:_

This full-time, state classified position is classified as either a Technician I (Police Communications Intern) or as a Police Communications Technician (Dispatcher), based on qualifications.

The position exists to receive emergent and non-emergent information via the telephone, radio, computer, alarms, printers, and in person contacts, which are dispatched to officers and other emergency personnel that may be needed and notifications made to the campus communities. This position operates dispatch equipment to include Computer Aided Dispatch; National and Colorado Crime Information Center computer; Computerized Network Video Recordings and live cameras; ID Access, door, and alarm computer; Fire Computer; E-911 Computer; University Police Radio; Aurora and Denver Police Radios; Hospital Radios; Mass Notification Systems; NOAA Weather Radio; Dictaphone Call-Check devices; Dictaphone Digital Recording Computer; Department Fax Machine; Department Copy Machine; TTY for the hearing impaired. The position also processes and maintains police records.

_Examples of Work Performed:_

SOFTWARE/EQUIPMENT/DATABASE OPERATIONS: Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Operate various equipment on a daily basis (ex. phone, radio, computers, software programs, dispatch equipment, alarms, monitors, etc.), and report malfunctions to appropriate supervisor or personnel.

TRAINING: Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Train on dispatch duties and processes by practicing, drilling, reading material and attending classes.

ACCESSING COLORADO AND NATIONAL CRIME INFORMATION CENTERS:Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Obtains, dispatches, enters, and cancels crime information on vehicles, persons, and property by using the computer to access the National and Colorado Crime Information Centers.

RECORDS: Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Processes, enters, maintains and distributes police records. Attention to detail skills and ability to verify accuracy in work is extremely important.

MONITORING: Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Monitors alarmed areas, fire systems, cameras other police agencies and weather conditions by viewing and listening to computers video monitors, printers and radios.

DISPATCHING: Employee will be performing duties in a learning and training role. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Dispatches officers/guards and other needed personnel by gathering information from the phone, radio, computers, alarms, and monitors.

Note: This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.

_Salary and Benefits:_

Hiring Salary Range for the Police Communication Intern (Technician I) is: $2,739 - $3,021 / month (non-negotiable)*

Hiring Salary Range for the Dispatcher (Police Communication Technician) is:

$3,586 - $3,955 / month (non-negotiable)*

*The salary offered is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions.

Police Communication Intern (Technician I)

_Minimum Qualifications:_

One year of experience as a receptionist,office administrator, and/or as a customer service representative.

Substitution: Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Dispatcher (Police Communications Technician)

_Minimum Qualifications:_

One year of experience in police radio/telephone communications equipment operations.

_Substitution:_

Successful completion of an authorized Communication Training Officer Program (or equivalent) may substitute for the year of required experience.

_Conditions of Employment:_

• Must be willing and able to work long hours, various shifts, weekends, and holidays

• Must be willing and able to provide off-hour phone contact information to be accessible during non-work hours in case of emergencies or to cover unscheduled staffing shortages

• Must be willing to be sedentary, sitting for long periods of time

• Must be willing and able to work in a confined work space

• Must not be color blind

• Must be willing and able to pass a Police Department Background Check which will include: Personnel History Questionnaire, Integrity Interview, Polygraph, Finger Print Check, Drug Screen, Credit/Civil Check, Criminal History, Driving Infractions Check, Reference Checks, and a post-conditional offer Psychological Evaluation.

• In special circumstances, this position may be assigned to support the Police Division in a security role. Persons in this position must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking/standing for extended periods of time, walk up and down stairs of multiple story buildings.

Police Communication Intern (Technician I)

_Preferred Qualifications:_

• Dispatching experience, of any kind, using radio/telephone/computer communications equipment

• Experience accessing and utilizing computerized records management systems

• Experience working in a police, security or law enforcement environment

• Experience monitoring alarmed areas, fire systems, cameras, etc.

• Bilingual or multilingual

• Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher

• Experience in a higher education or health care facility environment

• Experience accessing and utilizing Colorado and National Crime Information Center data (CCIC/NCIC)

• Experience using ARMS (Automated Records Management System) or similar computerized law enforcement records management system

• Experience monitoring alarmed areas, fire systems, cameras, etc.

• Bilingual or multilingual

• Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher
