_Nature of Work_: A Professional Research Assistant (PRA) full-time position is available to work in the laboratory of Dr. Alexander Horswill in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Colorado School of Medicine. The Horswill laboratory studies Gram-positive pathogens including/Staphylococcus aureus/and MRSA, and seeks to understand the bacterial and host factors important for the pathogenesis of colonization and disease.
_Duties and Responsibilities_: The successful candidate will be a productive member of the research team, participate in research projects, and help maintain the operation of the laboratory. Experience and background in molecular biology, bacterial genetics, tissue culture and working with mice is important for success in this position. The applicant should be able to work independently and as a member of a team. Flexible work hours, including infrequent evening or weekend, may be required. The employee will be working closely with the principle investigator in a small laboratory environment with growth potential.
Work will include, but not be limited to:
Laboratory management duties include ordering laboratory supplies, tracking of orders and expenses, maintaining inventory and research databases, overseeing hazardous waste in compliance with university policy
Performing experiments and tabulating/analyzing research data
Assistance of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in their projects
Preparation of research manuscripts and conduct literature searches
Maintenance of laboratory equipment and computers
Maintenance of tissue culture cell lines
Manipulate and handle bacterial pathogens (i.e. creating gene knockouts)
Performing mouse models of bacterial infection
Provide animal care related to research procedures
Conduct microscopy, flow cytometric, PCR and NGS analysis
Cloning of bacterial genes into DNA expression vectors
Purification of expressed proteins and Western blotting
Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
Trouble-shooting and problem-solving as related to the research project
Keep a detailed laboratory notebook, accurately collecting records of experiments and back-up data on departmental servers.
Present data during laboratory meetings
This position requires work with BLS2 pathogens including Methicillin Resistant/Staphylococcus aureus/(MRSA).
_Salary Range_: The starting salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience and will be negotiated accordingly.
_Salary and Benefits:_
The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

_Minimum Qualifications_- B.S. or B.A. degree in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field. At least one year of research lab experience is required. In addition, finalists must have research experience with mouse models.
_Preferred Qualifications_- Experience and background in molecular biology, bacterial genetics, tissue culture is highly desired.
Applicants should be well organized, reliable, independent, and possess considerable attention to detail. They should also have excellent verbal, written, and computational skills.
