The University of Colorado, Department of Medicine’s Division of Biomedical Informatics and Personalized Medicine (BIPM) has an opening for a full-time position Laboratory Technician in the Genetic Epidemiology laboratory. Under the direction and guidance of the Lab Manager, Ms. Monica Campbell, this full-time, benefits-eligible position exists to support the research work of Dr. Kathleen C. Barnes. The lab focuses on the genetic basis for acute and chronic airway disease and is based on family-based and independent population with many populations of African descent (African Caribbean, South American, Western European, and local African American Populations). The specific research interest involves epidemiology of complex lung diseases and diseases of allergy and inflammation. Current studies are focused on gene-interactions and the interface of innate and adaptive immunity in the immune-genetics of various lung diseases including asthma, acute lung injury, atopic dermatitis and schistosomiasis. We are located at the University of Colorado Anschutz campus and are looking for a professional technician that shares our core values of team work, self-awareness, motivation to excel, creativity and interconnectedness.
Professional Research Assistant – Biology, Genetics/Genomics
Work is performed under the general direction, guidance, and supervision of Ms. Monica Campbell, Lab Director.
Professional Research Assistant, Genetic Epidemiology Laboratory
The PRA will be responsible for oversight of sample preparation procedures in the research Lab. S/he will participate in development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) as they relate to procedures and methodologies for sample preparation. Additionally, s/he will perform all procedures on samples as they are received in the Laboratory to ensure sample integrity and assurance
_Examples of Work Performed_
This entry level technician will spend the majority of his/her time performing standard laboratory tasks and molecular biology techniques across the human discipline. These disciplines include but are not limited to DNA/RNA extractions and analysis; sample quality control and documentation; general lab inventory, organization and replenishment (procure new supplies). Specific examples of work performed include, but are not limited to:
Provides ongoing oversight for all biospecimen preparation (Blood, Buffy Coats, WBC’s, Plasma, Serum, DNA, RNA) procedures including, but not limited to: samples inventory, cataloging, and uploading into our bio-tracking system using standard operating procedures.
Extraction and purification of Nucleic Acid (DNA) and procedures as defined by relevant SOP’s (on our automated Autogen and Qiagen M48) using standard operating procedures
Performs and documents all required maintenance activities on instruments related to sample preparation in the research laboratory using standard operating procedures
Maintains adequate supply of reagents, supplies, and sample preparation kits.
Maintains detailed records of all samples prepared.
Records all data related to preparation protocols.
Performs quality analytics on extracted DNA aliquots using applied methodologies and platforms e.g. UV spectrophotometry to determine sample yield, concentration and purity (on Nanodrop, Multi Plate Reader Fluorescence, and XPS Gemini Pico Green) using standard operating procedures
Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized (DNA, serum and plasma) both manually and with fluid handling system (Tecan Freedom EVO) using standard operating procedures
Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into sample management database and location in freezer using standard operating procedures
Communicates in a timely manner with Laboratory Manager, and operations staff.
Reviews and analyzes operational, quality, and performance related metrics to assess the success of sample preparation activities.
Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.

Knowledgeable in Biology and Biotechnology

B.S. 4-year college degree, preferably in science or the healthcare field including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Pharmacy, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
An understanding of basic laboratory principles and biology techniques is required.
1 year laboratory experience.
Ability to learn new skills quickly; gathering data and information accurately; be flexible; work well within a group-setting; and possess strong organizational skills.
