The Department of Pediatrics has an opening for a Vice Chair of Education. The incumbent will report to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and will have oversight and executive managerial responsibility in integration and coordination of all of the department’s diverse educational programs. This includes providing support, guidance and advice to a diverse group of committees, work units, and individuals.

  • The Department of Pediatrics has a newly established Center for Education Research and Scholarship (CERS) which supports research and scholarship in health professions education and creates a culture of collaboration among educators across the department. The new Vice Chair for Education will be responsible for recruiting a Director for CERS.

_Examples of Work:_

Leadership/Development

  • Establish a clear vision for education, education research, scholarship, and training within the Department of Pediatrics, ensuring the quality of all educational programs and their compliance with regulatory requirements

  • Advocate for investment and improvement in existing and new educational programs and in educational research and scholarship

  • Convene regular meetings of the departmental educational community and participate in key meetings across the campus and community

  • Advise the Chair on educational priorities, funding needs, recruitment and infrastructure support for education programs that foster an environment that values and supports educational programs and education research and scholarship

  • Provide support and mentoring to faculty through professional development and encourage faculty members to maintain an on-going portfolio of educational contributions for promotion and tenure purposes and provide educational career consultations and consultations for promotion

  • Communicate with both new and current faculty members to roles and responsibilities in education and teaching and ensure awareness of institutional and national opportunities for the development of educational leadership, expertise, and scholarship

  • Identify, and design innovative activities that will enhance the educational experience of the members of the department aligned with the department guidelines, including faculty development programs for academic and clinical faculty and an annual educational retreat (which may include a visiting professor on a topic related to medical education)

  • Liaise with the School of Medicine in support of educational programs and initiatives

  • Interface with various key entities and networks to provide additional support to teachers across our campus and celebrate excellence in education

  • Work with interdisciplinary groups to support different learners and to promote education to all team members providing health care, including those within the community

  • Foster connections with departmental alumni associations

  • Represent the Department in national societies and/or committees

Financial/Administrative

  • Supervise the administrative staff under medical education in the department

  • Work with the Department to develop and maintain the annual operating budgets for all education programs and department education research and scholarship activities to ensure fiscal responsibility and establish sustainable financial stability, to include identifying areas of opportunity, support needed, and utilization of resources

  • Serve as an alternate representative for the Chair on hospital and university committees relevant to educational activities, in the Chair's absence or as the Chair deems appropriate

  • Liaise and collaborate with Children’s Hospital leadership and administration to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and advocate for investment and improvement in existing educational programs

  • Interface with various stakeholders to the facilitate education partnerships across the University

Strategic Planning/Growth

  • Contribute to departmental and hospital-wide strategic planning efforts and assure accomplishments pertinent to activities pertaining to the educational mission

  • Support the development and implementation of the use of technology to promote innovative curriculum, assessment, and evaluation within educational programs (e.g., learning management system, use of mobile devices to enter assessment data)

  • Meet with the Chair at least annually to review overall departmental educational events and contributions, anticipated or planned initiatives/goals for the upcoming year, as well as redefinition of the scope and direction of the Vice Chair for Education responsibilities

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, and/or PhD degree

  • A minimum of 5 years of UME or GME educational administrative experience – proven track record of educational leadership

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced training pertinent to the field of medical education and/or educational leadership – preferably both (e.g., Master Teacher Fellowship or equivalent, advanced degree in education, Educational Leadership courses)

  • Be a faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor or above

  • Experience working across departments, schools, and affiliated institutions
