The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus is a public research university with two campuses serving more than 18,000 students and awarding nearly 4,000 degrees each year. In addition to the wide array of health-related professional and graduate programs and facilities offered at CU Anschutz in Aurora, Colo., over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are provided at CU Denver, our comprehensive, general academic campus located in the heart of downtown Denver. The Anschutz Medical Campus is a leader in delivering the finest clinical care and the research mission is inherently entwined with our clinical services and mission.
The Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) is responsible for the direction and advocacy of our research endeavors. A priority within the leadership role of this position will be to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements that relate to research activity. The work will require collaborative coordination with the Deans’ offices and faculty leadership of the university’s colleges and schools, as well as the other university Vice Chancellors and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at the Denver campus. The VCR works closely with the Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs to fully align research with the overall missions of the two campuses.
The Vice Chancellor plays a leadership role in helping the campuses meet emerging research opportunities. Important components of the research agenda include building faculty involvement in program project grants, enhancing interdisciplinary research including establishing a new office devoted to identifying collaborative opportunities, connecting the relevant researchers, and obtaining multi-project grant support for these initiatives. The Vice Chancellor will also collaborate with the Dean of the Graduate School to further integrate research with our education and training programs and will coordinate activities that promote participation in research activities that enhance the reputation and standing of the university’s research enterprise.
The Vice Chancellor for Research reports directly to the CU Anschutz Chancellor, who will confer with the CU Denver Chancellor for goal-setting and evaluation purposes. The VCR is located at the Anschutz Medical Campus adjacent to the campus Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor for Research exercises collaborative supervision and authority over the Associate Vice Chancellor for Regulatory Compliance, the Director of the Animal Resource Center. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at the Denver Campus reports to both the Provost and the VCR, with primary reporting to the Provost. Centralized research centers and functions may also report to the Vice Chancellor for Research, e.g., Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Vice Chancellor for Research has responsibilities including, but not limited to:
Provides centralized leadership and advocacy of all university research activities to include the development and implementation of campus-level strategic plans for research. Works collaboratively with School/College leadership and faculty in overseeing the university research enterprise. The Vice Chancellor will assist the faculty in targeting the acquisition of federal, state and other institute/foundation resources.
Develops and/or maintains a monitoring system for quantitative assessment of research and scholarly productivity, e.g., providing measures and benchmarks for optimal space utilization at the Anschutz Campus.
Develops and maintains interactive relationships with NIH/NSF and other major funding agencies to facilitate growth in the CU Anschutz and CU Denver research enterprises.
Develops and maintains an effective internal and external communication process. The communication process should promote collaboration among the disciplines and campuses, enhance national and international visibility, as well as increase the understanding of the lay public and regulatory agencies about the importance and quality of the scholarship, research and creative work endeavors at CU Anschutz and CU Denver.
Provides direction to the reporting units specified above and coordinates the planning and accomplishment of the reporting units’ goals and objectives. Maintains oversight responsibility for budgets of all reporting units.
Coordinates pertinent programs and relationships between the Anschutz and Denver campuses, CU Boulder, the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and the CU System Office.
Oversees the continuation and improvement of all university programs for regulatory compliance for research activities. Coordinates with other compliance programs maintained by the CU System, and affiliates such as University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, CU Medicine, and the Auraria Higher Education Center.
Provides expert advice to the Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, Deans, and other university leadership on matters related to research.
Facilitates the enhancement and maintenance of an appropriate university research infrastructure to ensure effective and efficient support of scholarly activities by working closely with appropriate faculty advisory committees.
Works with the Offices of Advancement and the Chancellors to promote philanthropic fund raising for research.
Serves as the university interface with affiliate entities regarding matters related to research.
Participates in the planning for the construction of new research space and the renovation of existing research space.
Represents the Chancellors on assigned standing or special committees. Establishes and directs committees and task forces as appropriate.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in the conduct of academic research in a health sciences environment.
Extensive experience and expertise in management of large and complex programs with multiple constituents.
Extensive knowledge of the federal regulatory requirements for research.
Ability to analyze complex problems, formulate plans for resolution and follow through with implementation of the plans, through effective delegation of authority.
