Jobs in this career family involve development, marketing and management of messaging to both internal and external parties. Functions include marketing; advertising; communications; publications; brand management; writing; editing; proofreading; graphic design; web information architecture, development and design; web content development; electronic communications; social media; news media/relations; public relations; photography; videography; radio/television broadcasting; FCC compliance; and communication projects management.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Job Summary:

Reporting directly to the Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni Affairs, the Writer & Content Specialist is responsible for concepting, copywriting and creating story-driven content to promote awareness of and boost engagement with the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) among prospective students, current students and alumni/donors.

The Writer & Content Specialist will work closely with the school’s marketing team, recruitment team, faculty, student representatives and alumni to source, develop and execute content for the schools’ spectrum of marketing channels, including print, social media and website. Content created by the Writer/Content Specialist will tell the stories of the students, faculty and alumni to shine a bright light on the benefits and diversity of the profession. Highlighting the remarkable work they are doing in the field of pharmacy research is also a priority.

All content developed by the Writer/Content Specialist will be designed to align with and achieve departmental goals set forth by the Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni Affairs, on behalf of CU Anschutz Medical Campus.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Work with the Director to develop a compelling, engaging, content for the school’s communications channels

  • Network among Pharmacy School staff, faculty and students to identify and develop stories

  • Network with other Anschutz Medical Campus communicators to collaborate on stories, repurpose content and share Pharmacy School content with their audiences

  • Concept, copywrite, script and produce original content (print pieces, web copy, social media posts & graphics, emails, videos, presentations and other promotional materials)

  • Identify real time opportunities to connect relevant cultural trends, current news and online conversations with the people/work/stories of the Pharmacy School, and create engaging content that draws our audience into those connections

  • Rewrite existing website copy to align with brand voice & tone as part of campus website redesign, and write copy for new web pages/assets as dictated by need and creative direction

  • Translate/repurpose internally-focused content (such as grant proposals) for external audiences by rewriting/editing as needed

  • Translate a marketing strategy through content creation

  • Drive audience growth through strategic creation and implementation of original content

  • Integrate content strategies across relevant channels including web, social, print and earned media

  • Work with media relations consultant to develop content for pitches (might include video)

  • Work with videographer or internal video resources to create authentic video for social media, website and pitching

  • Manage school social media accounts in collaboration with the Digital Marketing Specialist

  • Employ best practices when writing for the web, including search engine optimization

  • Develop content for email journeys that address the lifecycle of our prospective students and furthers them along the path to matriculation

  • Stays current with best practices for new media and social media, and adjusts writing style to maximize reach

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism, advertising, marketing, branding, content creation, and/or communications

  • At least one (1) year experience in marketing, communications or journalism in one or more of the following:

o Copywriting, journalism, or equivalent writing experience

o Developing/creating/managing content and content strategies

o Developing and implementing marketing, communications, advertising, social media, email and/or public relations strategies and initiatives

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis, but not for the specific 1 year of experience.

  • Creative thinker. You hear “This is the way we’ve always done it” and you think “There’s a better way.” Better yet, you have the interpersonal skills to effectively marshal stakeholder buy-in when recommending/implementing new approaches and methods.

  • Proven ability to create content that is relevant, engaging, compelling and effective, with a knowledge of current content and cultural trends across the ever-changing, ever-growing landscape of marketing channels, platforms and touchpoints

  • Flair for and experience in research, from the driest of topics to trending memes and zeitgeists; identifying why and how they matter to our audience; and communicating that effectively through copywriting and content

  • Salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience

  • This position is not eligible for overtime compensation
