Job Summary

Facilities Management at CU Boulder has an opening for an Arborist. This position assists the Campus Arborist with tree maintenance and care on the Boulder Campus. This position will also conduct snow removal and other landscape duties. The incumbent must have at least three years of related education and/or experience in grounds care and landscape maintenance. We are looking for someone who is dedicated to customer service, has a strong willingness to learn, and exercises reliability and flexibility. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Tree Maintenance

  • Maintain trees and large shrubs on campus by functioning as an assistant to the Lead Arborist and to the Arboriculture Manager. Assist with monitoring the condition of trees and large shrubs.

  • Prune and/or remove trees as needed working from the ground, with lift trucks or platform devices, or aloft with rope and saddle. Assist Lead Arborist with in-canopy rigging and tree felling operations.

  • This position will require real time decision making while climbing, rigging, and felling trees, and it will complete some jobs independently. Must be able to identify tree genera and assess tree condition and health in order to properly prescribe, and correctly execute, pruning and other care.

  • Conduct groundsman/worksite duties and ensures worksite security and clean up.

  • Position will assist with tree risk assessment and decision making related to the mitigation of hazards and/or storm damage in trees as needed.

  • Drive/operate dump trucks, lift trucks/platforms, skidsteers and stump grinders.

  • This position will identify and remove invasive tree species from native areas.

  • Participate in compiling campus tree inventory by collecting and entering data with GIS equipment.

  • Position will conduct all tree work according to arboricultural industry best management practices, including all safety standards.

Clearance Pruning

  • Conduct sidewalk and clearance and public safety pruning and make independent decisions related to campus safety as well as to landscape aesthetics.

  • Improve public safety through appropriate pruning near light fixtures. Prune trees and shrubs to improve sight lines for traffic safety and campus signage.

Plant Material Establishment

  • This position will make suggestions for new tree plantings, selection of nursery stock, and assist in the planting of trees on campus.

  • Monitor health and status of recently installed plant materials to maximize establishment. May supervise students or temporary employees conducting this work.

  • Remove guying materials as appropriate. Conduct hand watering for plant materials as appropriate using vehicle mounted tanks or other sources.

Snow Removal

  • Conduct and monitor snow removal and ice abatement activities to reduce campus liability. Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, curb cuts, paved trails, parking lots and ADA ramps using powered or manual methods in a timely manner. Respond for snow removal as required based on University activities.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Service, inspect and maintain equipment related to tree work including versa-lift, wood chipper, utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, chain saws, and hand tools. Train others in the correct use and care of equipment.

Safety

  • Actively contribute to a safe working environment for self, co-workers and the public. Adheres to all safety guidelines, especially concerning, rope and saddle climbing, harness use, site security, and equipment operation. Must report unsafe conditions or accidents to the lead or supervisor. This position may call in, or use in the field, utility locates.

What You Should Know

  • Incumbent must either currently hold or have the ability to attain Certified Arborist certification within three years of employment. Must earn continuing education credits (CEC's) in order to maintain certified status.

  • Must pass DOT Physical as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or have the ability to obtain CDL Class B license within one year of employment in order to drive vehicles in excess of 26,000 GVW.

  • Must maintain a valid DOT physical card at all times.

What We Require

  • 3 years of experience in groundskeeping or landscape care/maintenance or related field. Related education can substitute for the experience on a year for year basis.

  • Willingness to learn and utilize CAD/GIS tools and equipment for updating and using tree inventory systems.

  • A strong commitment to safe practices and habits in the workplace.

  • The willingness and ability to continually acquire and apply arboricultural maintenance skills and knowledge.

  • A candidate with tree work/arboriculture experience and tree/plant identification is highly desirable.
