CIRES Research Associate / CSD Research Associate
The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU-Boulder and the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Chemical Sciences Division (CSD, https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/csd/) are seeking a research associate to measure the chemical composition of aerosols in the atmosphere. The successful candidate will obtain and analyze field measurements of single-particle composition from NASA ATom (https://espo.nasa.gov/home/atom/content/ATom) and other field campaigns in support of NOAA and CIRES air quality and climate goals. Research foci include investigating the abundance, sources, transport, and removal of mineral dust, biomass burning, sea salt, and other climate relevant aerosol. The project will involve collaborations with external modeling groups to incorporate aerosol measurements into global climate simulations.

The initial term of the appointment is for one year, with expectation of renewal for up to three years. Review of applications will start in April, 2017 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Work within an existing group of researchers within NOAA/ESRL to perform field and laboratory measurements of aerosol composition related to air quality and climate.
Work independently to operate and maintain aerosol instrumentation aboard research aircraft at remote field locations. Field studies may include travel for periods up to four weeks.
Analyze and interpret measurements to improve our physical understanding of atmospheric aerosol processes.
Prepare and present scientific findings in peer-review publications, scientific meetings, and workshops.
PhD (required) in chemistry, chemical-physics, physics, or related field.
Experience with mass spectrometry.
Experience with the design, construction, and operation of complex instrumentation.
Experience in analyzing complex data sets.
Experience in aerosol research.
Experience with airborne measurements of atmospheric properties.
Excellence in development and presentation of scientific results for meetings and for publication in scientific journals.
Ability to work independently and in a closely collaborative group.
