Job Summary

The Data & Analytics (D&A) division within the Office of Information Technology encourages applications for a Data Visualization Senior Professional! This position plays a pivotal role in setting a standard for excellent data communication, advancing our use of Tableau, exploring new and innovative approaches, and tools for data visualization. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of visualization standard processes, expert skills in Tableau, and a curiosity about simplifying the complex. They would also thrive on a multi-functional team with a stakeholder-facing role where exceptional communication skills are paramount. Key responsibilities include designing, developing, maintaining, and publishing compelling, accurate and accessible data visualizations and dashboards using Tableau and other leading data visualization tools. This position is responsible for serving as the domain expert for standard processes in data visualization, data reporting, and corresponding products.This position may be hired at the technical lead professional level for a suitably qualified candidate. In which case, the position would operate as a Lead Data Visualization Professional providing training and guidance on projects to other team members and serving as a resource for troubleshooting of advanced challenges. The Data & Analytics group's mission is to foster an understanding of institutional knowledge. This is done by transforming data into actionable intelligence to aid decision-making processes throughout the university. Some offerings include department- and campus-level surveys, faculty course questionnaires, and data collection, analysis, and visualization.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Data Visualization Design, Development, Maintenance & Publication:

  • This position will collaborate with campus partners and the D&A team to design, develop and maintain compelling, accurate, and accessible data visualizations and dashboards using Tableau and other leading data visualization tools.

  • This includes:

  • Working closely with customers to understand their data visualization needs and translate complex datasets and analytic results into clear and insightful reports.

  • Engaging in technical discussions with confidence.

  • Leading design discussions and offering solutions and alternatives to meet and exceed partner expectations.

  • Curating and validating datasets from multiple sources.

  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams, including data analysts and technical staff, to ensure quality, data security, accuracy, and integrity in visualizations.

  • Establishing data update and maintenance schedule for data visualizations.

  • Supervising the publication of data visualizations through various channels, including our website and Tableau public/private platforms.

  • Improving discoverability of data visualizations.

  • Ensuring consistency across our data visualizations.

  • Ensuring compliance with accessibility standards,

  • At the principal professional level this position would additionally:

  • Serve as a resource for troubleshooting and escalation of data visualization challenges from other team members

Data Visualization Domain Expert:

  • This position will serve as a subject matter expert in standard processes for data visualization and data visualization products.

  • This includes:

  • Working in close partnership with the Digital Accessibility and User Experience teams to develop procedures and templates to ensure a consistent and accessible user experience across all data visualizations.

  • Providing expert advice to other analysts and developers on how to improve the technical efficiency, accessibility, and effectiveness of their data visualizations.

  • Staying abreast of the newest technologies and tools in data visualization.

  • Advocating for and guiding the adoption of data visualizations tools and practices that enhance our effectiveness.

  • Organizing data visualization product demonstrations and creating resources for comparing the products available for use.

  • Conduct workshops and training sessions for partners and internal teams on data visualization tools to cultivate a culture of data literacy.

  • At the principal professional level this position would additionally:

  • Establish standards on practices in our data visualizations ensuring consistency, ease of use, and compliance with accessibility standards.

  • Developing internal guides when new data visualization products are adopted.

This position will also serve as the CU Boulder campus liaison to the Tableau Server administrators at University of Colorado Information Systems (UIS). This includes collaborating with UIS to facilitate exceptional service to D&A and campus Tableau users.

What You Should Know

  • This role is working in a hybrid work situation, working predominantly remotely. The position will be expected to come to campus in Boulder, CO at least one per month, though may be required on campus more often.

What We Can Offer

  • At the P3 level, $75,100 - $86,350. At the P4 level, $86,900 - $95,600 annually.

What We Require

  • A Bachelors degree (or equivalent experience) from an accredited institution in computer science, information science, applied math, statistics, psychology, or related field. A combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.

  • At the Senior Professional level: Three years of experience in the design, development, and maintenance of interactive data visualizations, two years of which includes using applied behavior analytics and methodologies or programming related to analytics (preferably Python, R, or SQL).

  • At the Principal Professional level: Five years of experience in the design, development, and maintenance of interactive data visualizations, two years of which includes using applied behavior analytics and methodologies or programming related to analytics (preferably Python, R, or SQL).

What You Will Need

  • Solid foundation in data analysis, user experience and visualization principles, with the ability to translate sophisticated data sets into intuitive reports.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences clearly.

  • Experience working directly with clients, understanding their requirements, and delivering solutions that meet their needs.

  • Solid understanding of data preparation and preprocessing, with the ability to work with diverse datasets.

  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining data security and integrity checks from data source to visualization.

  • Demonstrated ability in knowing the latest on emerging technologies and adapting to new technologies and tools.

  • Ability to work well in collaborative environments and contribute to a positive work culture.
