Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Department of Human Resources encourages applications for an Employee Relations Consultant ! This position provides guidance to the University community regarding a variety of HR topics including employee relations issues, the performance management process, progressive discipline, and provides guidance to employees in addressing grievances, dispute resolutions and appeals. This position assists in developing policies and procedures for the Boulder campus that align with federal, state and local laws and State Personnel Board Rules and Procedures, COWINS procedures, as well as University and campus policies and procedures, and provides occasional training regarding unemployment compensation, leave programs, leave sharing, the reasonable employer process, worker's compensation and on the job injury (OJI). As part of the Employee Relations team, this position will also assist with various programs, research, and training initiatives as needed.

The ER Consultant will be hired at either the Professional or Senior level, requirements for each are listed in the What We Require section. We are looking for someone with at least 1 year of experience in human resources employee relations work who has strong collaboration and communication skills to join our team and partner with our CU community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Advises all CU Boulder and System Administration employees regarding policies and procedures enforced by the Office of Employee Relations.

  • Provides advice and guidance regarding the progressive disciplinary and grievance processes.

  • Assists departments in addressing grievance and dispute resolution matters.

  • Evaluates, confers, advises and recommends methods of conflict resolution in a variety of labor relations issues.

  • Ensures advice is consistent with the state personnel rules and procedures and University and campus policies and guidance provided by University counsel.

  • Reviews corrective actions and disciplinary actions to ensure they align with State Personnel Board Rules and Procedures and University policies. Ensures defensible decisions by departments through advice and counsel.

  • Provides guidance regarding all leave programs, including FMLA, FAMLI, short term disability, long term disability, parental leave, leave sharing, injury leave and PERA disability.

  • Understands how the unemployment compensation program is administered.

  • Provides training regarding programs, as necessary.

  • Researches policies, practices and procedures, case law and training programs and assist in creating new and innovative policies and programs.

  • Works with the team and Director to determine what types of programs, policies and training initiatives are needed to improve and enhance programs.

What You Should Know

This position will work a hybrid format with some in-person days and some remote days.

What We Can Offer

This position may be filled at the Professional or Senior level.

  • Professional Level: Annual salary range is $60,000 to $63,440.

  • Senior Professional Level: Annual salary range is $68,100 to $70,824.

What We Require

Professional Level:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience/education may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.

  • 1 year of human resources experience in employee relations.

Senior Professional Level:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience/education may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.

  • 3 years of human resources experience in employee relations.

What You Will Need

  • Understanding of performance management, progressive discipline, and grievance and dispute resolution processes.

  • Familiarity with complex leave programs, such as FMLA, short term disability and leave sharing programs.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to ensure that key information is shared in a timely fashion.

  • Ability to develop and deliver information in multi-modes that demonstrate the needs of different audiences.

  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences and the ability to work inclusively with various constituencies with diverse lived experiences.

  • Ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.

  • Ability to research and interpret policies and procedures.
