The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado is seeking a recent graduate in the field of mechanical or aerospace engineering (or a related field) to lead the mechanical design of current and future small space missions. The successful candidate will work with CU Professors Brian Fleming and Kevin France on a wide variety of existing projects, including small satellites and cubesats, sounding rocket-borne instruments, and laboratory technology development. The candidate will be expected to support launch operations, integration and testing activities, and laboratory assembly and calibration in addition to carrying out the mechanical design. Applicants able to spend 4-6 weeks at remote launch sites per year (including White Sands Missile Range, Reagan Test Site, Wallops Flight Facility, and Equatorial Launch Australia) will be given special consideration.
Who We Are
The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.
LASP combines all aspects of space exploration through our expertise in science, engineering, mission operations, and scientific data analysis. As part of CU, LASP also works to educate and train the next generation of space scientists, engineers and mission operators by integrating undergraduate and graduate students into working teams. Our students take their unique experiences with them into government or industry, or remain in academia to continue the cycle of exploration.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Provide support for mechanical design and assembly and calibration in conjunction with both the senior science team as well as students.
Support integration and testing activities for suborbital and nanosatellite missions.
Assist with launch operations for suborbital rockets and nanosatellites as needed.
Perform mechanical and thermal design and test.
Support environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum etc.).
Mentorship is provided by senior personnel.

Works well in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Interest in gaining exposure to multiple engineering disciplines.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Strong Solidworks skills.
Student experience in CubeSat design.
Experience with optical and mechanical assembly, finite element analysis, electrical components, optics, and/or vacuum equipment would be a strong attribute.
