The Office of Digital Education reports to the Chancellors of the CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campuses and is leveraging the combined expertise of these innovative units to advance the campus’ capabilities to support the needs of today’s employers. As such, the unit is entering a period of rapid evolution and growth. The investment by the campuses in the Office of Digital Education, combined with recent commitments focused on online education by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, make this a rare and exciting opportunity to work with this team.

Nature of the Work:

The Office of Digital Education is accepting applications for The Associate Director of Web Development and User Experience, a full-time university staff (non-classified) position. The Associate Director of Web Development and User Experience in the Office of Digital Education leads a team of Web Applications Developers, Content Strategists, SEO Analyst, Graphic Designers, and web project timelines for web and other digital assets assigned. Responsible for the ongoing oversight of online marketing operations as well as integration with other CU platforms and other non-digital campaign materials for the Office of Digital Education (ODE). This includes driving the overall standards for interactive projects and collaboratively developing strategies to enhance the CU Online user experience while reinforcing the branding message. Management and oversight of top-level ODE projects includes:, CU Online social platforms, and ODE website.

The Web Communications team will be responsible for planning, designing, coding, documenting, testing and maintaining websites, web applications, integrations and infrastructure systems in support of enterprise Office of Digital Education initiatives. The team will work to create memorable, accessible and innovative user experiences on the web with the highest level of visual and interactive design, programming and architecture.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Design, develop, document, test and maintain websites, web applications, system architecture and infrastructure

  • Collaborate with other University marketing and communications teams, academic departments and colleges to help them establish the technical specifications, functionality and aesthetics needed to produce and maintain web projects

  • Work with designers, communicators and marketers to analyze the feasibility and efficacy of websites and web application projects

  • Utilize current industry-accepted standards, best-practices and tools to develop accessible, sustainable, scalable code and products

  • Collaborate with Office of Digital Education, IT and other university staff to create effective documentation for websites, web applications, web processes and server infrastructure

  • Assist in defining project scope, schedule and deliverables for website projects

  • Oversee various aspects of primary web properties including but not limited to code, content, structure and graphics

  • Work with other team members and vendors on web, content management (CMS), CRM and network systems optimization.

  • Work with IT counterparts on updating and developing on systems and tools for maintaining and monitoring infrastructure, maintaining data security and maximizing up-time and availability

  • Develop and manage APIs and support web service architecture to connect websites/content with other data systems

  • Ensure the usability and accessibility (508 compliance and WCAG standards) of web sites and other communications (pdfs, videos, etc.) delivered on the internet

  • Be a leader in visual front-end design using photoshop, illustrator, CSS (including bootstrap and other frameworks), html5 and javascript to develop responsive websites and online experiences

  • Stay current with technology and software as it applies to web design, development, support and Office of Digital Education needs

  • Develop a cohesive User Experience (UX) for websites that meet the needs of multiple end-user platforms (desktop, tablet, smartphone, etc.)

  • Maintain web analytics systems and create reports to be used for statistical tracking and logging in the Learning Resources websites

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established and is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in computer science, information systems, graphic design, or related field from an accredited college or university

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in the fields of websites, web applications, integrations and infrastructure systems

  • Three (3) or more years experience in a web designer/developer role

  • Two (2) or more years experience in direct report management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Progressively complex experience in web design and development

  • Experience in higher education

  • Experience with Sitefinity a plus

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in CSS and HTML, as well as front-end debugging and troubleshooting

  • Ability to manage web analytics systems (such as Google Analytics) to for analysis and tracking purposes

  • Ability to design and develop the User Experience (UX) needs for multi-device implementation (desktop, tablet, smartphone, etc.)

  • Working knowledge and understanding of graphic design software for print and web (such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and etc.)

  • Highly motivated and a professional self-starter, able to successfully manage multiple and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently with reliable professional judgment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, with all levels of staff and administrators in the organization, and with our CU partners in Marketing, and in colleges and schools.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively with a team and across the organization to achieve desired results.

  • Strong work ethic and positive problem-solving attitude, and enthusiasm for and experience in team building and skills in a collaborative working environment.

  • Skills to organize and complete complex projects and to work under tight deadlines.
