Job Summary:

The Department of Bioengineering has an opening for a Senior Research Associate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To lead, support, and work on medical device design and development efforts across multiple clinical disciplines including gastrointestinal, emergency / combat medicine, cardiovascular, and surgery.

  • To manage the various projects in the Shandas Innovation Lab, ensuring work continues to progress toward milestones, that the projects are on budget and are appropriately resourced.

  • Help recruit and mentor lab personnel including undergraduate and graduate students, professional research personnel, and others.

  • Implement quality and design control / design assurance processes on all design projects. Ensure documentation is up to date and meeting all required standards.

  • Help with and write grants to expand the lab's funding in the medical device and related areas.

  • Pitch product ideas to a variety of stakeholders and funding agencies.

  • Ensure lab supplies and equipment are up to date and meeting regulatory standards; order replacements as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

For the Research Associate position:

  • BS or MS degree or equivalent in an Engineering field, preferably in Bioengineering / Biomedical Engineering. Relevant job experience (minimum 3 years) may be substituted for the advanced degree.

  • Experience working with and implementing industry processes for quality, design controls, regulatory, and related standards for medical device design and manufacturing.

  • Experience developing new medical devices and fundraising to support device development.

  • Project management experience including management of project budgets.

For the Senior Research Associate position:

  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent in an Engineering field, preferably in Bioengineering / Biomedical Engineering. Relevant job experience (minimum 10 years) may be substituted for the advanced degree.

  • Experience working with and implementing industry processes for quality, design controls, regulatory, and related standards for medical device design and manufacturing.

  • Experience developing new medical devices and fundraising to support device development.

  • Project management experience including management of project budgets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience and familiarity with engineering design, including prototyping, creation of minimum viable products (MVPs), testing, design for manufacturing.

  • Understand failure modes and effects analysis and how to implement FMEA across the product life cycle

  • Knowledge of mechanical testing, electronic breadboarding, CAD, and other foundational tools to support engineering design.

  • Experience writing grants, pitching ideas to investors, and other mechanisms to generate funding for design projects.

  • Experience as an effective team leader and team member.

  • Experience in biomedical lab research.

  • Willingness to work with and handle animals, animal tissue, and human tissue.

  • Self motivation and ability to work independently and in groups.

The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus is seeking applicants for a full time Senior Research Associate. The successful candidate will lead, support, and work on design and research projects focused on medical devices and translational bioengineering, with strong focus on incorporating industry-standard processes around quality, design controls, manufacturing, and V&V, into the process of creating new medical devices and products. The candidate is also expected to lead and help with writing research grants, develop industry-academia partnerships with local and national industry, and mentor lab personnel.
